A Person-Centered Approach
ONE PERSPECTIVE
In My Own Words
I remember being a teenager and not feeling like I could talk to anyone. Oftentimes I kept my feelings inside and never felt confident to express myself. I didn't share my feelings because I felt afraid, ashamed, insecure, and a host of other things. I found solace in journaling which continues to be a safe outlet for me today. Over time I learned that keeping my feelings buried inside did more harm and never allowed me to feel emotionally secure. You are entitled to your feelings and need a safe place to express them. How you feel matters and therapy can be that place to express yourself. Too often we are concerned about hurting others and being judged or criticized while ignoring how we feel. We diminish our voice and feel as though no one understands. It is important to acknowledge how we feel and to be validated.
I can assist by helping you to explore the presenting concerns in a safe and nurturing environment. Treatment modalities include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). With your permission, I encourage the use of Expressive Arts Therapy (EAT) as a multi-arts approach to psychotherapy.

"People of color, particularly African Americans, feel the stigma more keenly. In a race-conscious society, some don't want to be perceived as having yet another deficit."
